Re: Sciatica
once the problem is under control i would suggest seeing a rehab physio who can help treat the cause of the problem - be it posture or a weakness somewhere in the body.

otherwise take the time to read "becoming a supple leopard" it will change your life. kind of.

Re: Sciatica
I got my initial injury when playing in goal - I play at such a low level that sometimes we don't have a voluntary keeper and have to take turns of a half in that position.

At a corner, an opposition player put his forearm across my shoulders and, instead of hitting the deck and screaming for a foul, I tried to resist the downward pressure...

The rest is medical history

Re: Sciatica
Give a Kinesiologist a call over the phone to see if they can help before making an appointment because they are expensive. My sciatica was so bad a few years ago that I couldn't do up my shoes because of shooting pain in my hamstrings. Went to a Kinesiologist a couple of times (they deal with pressure points etc) and was done. £180 but I could do up my shoes again and it extended my playing days for a few years. Worth a phone call.

Re: Sciatica
there is a very good reason people describe sitting as a 'disease'.

quite simply humans are not designed to be sedentary for long periods other than sleep. i've learnt the hard way as my lower back & hip flexors are a mess.

Yep - a real pain. Used to take me 2-3 minutes to shuffle 8 metres down our hallway. Prednisone got it sorted for me, virtually overnight.

Re: Sciatica
Must be different kinds of Sciatica as I been told I'll have mine on and off for life... MRI and CAT scans show that I have scarring around the ruptured disc and that it will literally be there until the day I die... like I said I manage it... I know what I can and can't do... probably on average I get the arse/leg pins and needless/numbness about 2 or 3 tiumes a week... maybe lasting 2 or 3 hours... I can handle that .... my Mum's back went and she was stuck on Tylex.... when my back first went she chucked a coupe my way... fuck living your life taking that shit... It's like being on It's a Small World constantly at Disneyland...

Re: Sciatica
Had a field sales role in my early 20's which meant driving around the country 3/4 days a week for up to 6/7hrs a time.
Up till that point I'd never actually driven more than 3/4hrs in one go....Turns out my seating/driving position was all wrong and I got diagnosed with Sciatica.
I'd never had any kind of back pain before that and always thought it was an easy way to skive. Not anymore, it fucking butchered me!!
Got the exercises and told how I should be sat in the car and it went in a few weeks!

Re: Sciatica
My disc went when I 32(ish) .... gutted as was probably playing the best football of my life at the time... by the time I got to a physio (saw John Gowan the Southend United physio) was about a month after it herniated... I was a crooked mess... lost 40% of my posture and literally looked like a deranged freak when he showed me in the full length mirror ... took him 2 months of manipulation to get me to stand up straight again... said at the time that if I was earning money out the game he would pension me off but said that he could get me back playing but I would never be the same player... boy was he right... 2 seasons of constant injuries and being embarrassed by usual inferior opponents made my mind up... I bowled out half gracefully...

Re: Sciatica
Same for me boleyn8420. I played until 50 for a reserve team and in fact had my last game at Millwall at the age of 53 despite having collapsed some discs at 30. I then carried on playing squash until 56 or 57.

It's weird but my back muscles became well developed to make up for the structural weakness in my spine. I don't suffer from arthritis generally but unknown to me was that gradually, as my back muscles weakened and arthritis expanded around the spinal column inside the vertebrae, the pain and limited movement returned.

I had a 4.5 hours back op where they cut 3 of the vertebrae, cleaned up the inside without damaging the spinal column and fixed vertebrae 3, 4 and 5 together somehow. Recovery took time but within a few months I was ready for pre-season training again....

Re: Sciatica
Im 61 and had, because of disc problems caused by a cunt playing football in my teens, sciatica on and off for the last 40 odd years. Told by doctors that unless I had a back op I could be in a wheelchair by the time i'm 50. I asked if there was an alternative and told me at that time core exercises was something new but didn't hold out much hope unless I went under the knife.

Still do core exercises morning and night, played football till my knee went till I was 56 and I still play golf every week.

So to summarize you have it for life but it is manageable. When I'm pissed and forget a night'e exercise, its fucking painful in the morning but a Naproxin (strong anti-inflammatory) helps it till the next round of stretches and exercises.

Pretty long winded arn't I wonderful and agreeing with everything else everyone has said so far spiel wasn't it.

But its a cunt but it can be managed. Best of luck

Re: Sciatica
Yes, diagnosed with DDD many moons ago. Been in agony at times on and off, had to sleep on the bedroom oak floorboards for six months (was getting desperate and considered an OP) , until it righted itself.

Relation put me off, having the OP after ended up in a wheelchair when they hit a nerve going in. Out of wheelchair now but right leg has withered like a Belsen victim and can only stand for a few minutes.

Hard mattress and core muscle exercises (you tube is your friend) every day, keeps it at bay of sorts. Sitting for too long causes problems.

I've had a herniated disc... and I have had sciatica... Herniated disc you feel like you have been shot by a Jap sniper... every bit of wind gets sucked out of you and you are fucked to the point you want someone to use an Elephant gun on you and put you out of your misery.....

Sciatic for me is painful needle and pins in right leg and right buttock that lasts fort a few hours.... yeah this is a legacy from me back but it does not stop me going around my normal daily duties...

Re: Sciatica
herniated disc L4 & L5 and yes its painful akin to toothache down leg. another MRI tomorrow to see if a 'decompression' op is the way forward. anyone had any experience in this? cant believe this im only 51 and always though i was pretty healthy

Re: Sciatica
Had it a few years ago, after a kick in the back playing football.

Never known pain like it - couldn't get out of bed in the morning, absolute agony.

There is no way around it - just wait and it will sort itself out. I did physio - stretching and the like - every day but I don't know if it made any difference.

Join a couple of sciatica forums online. Won't help the pain but psychologically it does help to discuss it with other people going through the same thing.

Re: Sciatica
It was painful a lot of the time. The longer bout was worse, as I couldn't find a position which didn't hurt to be in.

The more recent bout was a lot easier, as I could find a shape to my body which was almost pain-free, although there was still numbness.

Unfortunately, staying in that position wasn't compatible with playing football.

Or only the Sammy Lee role of blocking the keeper's view by lying on the ground in an offside position "without interfering with play"...

Re: Sciatica
Very rarely get any illnessss but in the last year got my first bout ot gout (absolutely painful cunt) and just after that sciatica (an even more painful cunt).

I was signed off for 2 weeks with Sciatica and couldn’t walk, couldn’t sit so just stood most that time propped up against the back wall of my house, luckily it was summer so I ended up with a quality tan. Apart from the drugs I got a TENS machine, which helped loads, put the pads on the bottom of your arse and each side of your spine and whack it on max.

Re: Sciatica
I suffered with it for years - off and on. Since moving to France they checked me out thoroughly. They found that damage to 3 discs had turned arthritic and was gripping the spinal column causing pain, restricting movement and would cripple me eventually.

Good old NHS never once X-rayed me. Had an op in France 5 years ago and fit as a fiddle again apart from a foot long scar on my back.

Re: Sciatica
Rearrange or rethink your typical sitting position. That helped me.
